The series is set during World War I and is a part of the BBC First World War centenary season.〔 It featured the Western Front, the Gallipoli Campaign, the Battle of the Somme, the Eastern Front, and the American Expeditionary Forces.〔 The five-part drama is written by Tony Jordan.〔
